The problem
Most people know a strong password needs length and variety, but few enjoy making one. Encryptor started as a small password tool in 2024 (its earlier version was called Encryptor 4.67.3 Dev Edition). Version 2.0 rebuilds it as three tools in one place, one of them a game.
What I built
- Generator: creates passwords up to 1024 characters long.
- Wordlist: builds custom wordlists, useful for security testing of your own systems.
- PassQuest: a game where your password must satisfy 13 rules that unlock one after another. It starts simple (at least 4 characters, a number, an uppercase letter, a symbol), then asks for a month, a country, digits that add up to 25, a sponsor name, a chemical element symbol, a city, a color, a fruit and a day of the week.
Decisions
- Static and fast. Next.js App Router with static export, deployed to GitHub Pages: no server, nothing to keep running.
- Rules as code. PassQuest's rules live in one TypeScript module, each with its text and a validation function, ported exactly from the original game so the behaviour did not change in the rewrite.
- Theme system. Light and dark themes run on CSS variables under a data-theme attribute; fonts are self-hosted through next/font.
Built with Next.js, React 19 and TypeScript, with my mentor Eslam Fathy.
